We open in a week from today at The New Ohio Theater part of terraNOVA Collective's soloNOVA Arts Festival! It's taken almost 2 years, but Andrea Kuchlewska, Liam Billingham and myself have been working hard to get this up and going in our hometown so we couldn't be more thrilled with our debut.
Opening night in Hong Kong at 8pm! Already 40 tickets sold. Had a radio interview with Phil Wheelan on RTHK yesterday, set to have a live phone interview this morning as well. Getting nervous and wishing I could sleep past 6am over here...long day ahead of picking up bathtub, teching the show and then givin it to the people! Woot woot.
Yesterday, received a phone call from the far east to hold an interview for the upcoming run in Hong Kong. The piece will be published on CNNGo.com in the upcoming weeks prior to the show's premiere.
The run in Amsterdam Fringe was successful! Still intrigued by each audience's reactions. Hong Kong will be the first run with primarily English speaking houses, so it will be interesting to see if the humor translates better than in the Dutch community.
Andrea and I have been meeting to discuss rewrites as well as finding a producer who can help us launch this show on our home turf in New York City! Coming soon...
Opened last night in the Amsterdam Fringe Festival! Great audience, almost full. Wonderful to have Sam and Anna Levy in the house. We did have a couple minor glitches, but such is live theater. The gentelmen at Rozentheater could not be more welcoming and accomodating so feeling very lucky and a bit overwhelmed at the warm reception for the show. Three more performances to go tonight, tomorrow and Tuesday evenings. Hoping to finally head over to the Fringe Hub tonight to meet some other performers and get the word out!
Six weeks to Hong Kong!
After about a month and a half of giving HFB a rest, Andrea Kuchlewska, Liam Billingham and I are finally meeting for a pre-Amsterdam rehearsal/Andrea-has-never-seen-me-perform-the-play brush-up! There are some possible rewrites to think about but mostly I just need to make sure it's all still alive and well in my noggin.
I have a tub and I have a techie who will never replace the skills and pre-show stupidity of Mr. Billingham, but I'm sure it will be a romping good time nonetheless!
Also: looking at future fringe options. My old professor sent me a link to a grant that is geared toward shows looking to be involved in international fringes so: Edinburgh? Adelaide, Australia? Mexico City?
So, it's official. Amsterdam Fringe: September 2-6. Hong Kong Microfest: October 17-22! They're both flying me over and who knows who I'll meet next! Now, I just need to get my pr together to put bums in those seats!
We are hoping to finally bring the show to our hometown of NYC some time after returning from the far east, but there may be some rewrites as well as some funding needed before we dive into our home turf.
For now, I plan to get back into rehearsals for Human Fruit Bowl mid-August, while doing a show called FIT in the NYC Fringe Festival, and gearing up for some more international travel!
Best of Prague in Amsterdam!
Hong Kong Microfest!
After an exhausting day of a final performance and dragging myself to the after-fringe party, looks like my second wind was worth it as I was pulled aside and told "Harmony, Anneka wants to meet you." Through a hazy conversation about how much she loved the show I came to realize that I had been invited to the Amsterdam Fringe in September! Score! Wasn't I just day dreaming about fringing in Amsterdam? How could it get better than that? Oh wait, here's how: not only are they naming me "The Best in Prague" but they are paying my way and setting me up in accommodations. Sam, pinch me, please. I'm still kind of uncertain as to whether the conversation really happened, but I keep getting reassurance that it's real.
So, off I trot to Amsterdam from September 2nd-6th for Human Fruit Bowl's Netherlands debut. Happy Birthday weekend!
Well, Human Fruit Bowl had its last performance tonight at the Prague Fringe. For the most part, we've had very positive response and two great reviews and even talk of taking the show to other countries! In fact, I've been asked to fill in for a performance in another Prague theatre thang on Monday for a student who came to see my show and realized I had modeled for her way back when I lived in Prague. Pretty nifty. Looks like I'll be spreading my nudity to other Prague zones...So, the play is making a mark and it's pretty clear that we should continue to explore other cities and other audiences.
Hopefully, when my lovely playwright returns to NYC at the end of the summer, we can start rewrites and work-shopping to keep it going! Planning to hold an invite-only performance to get feedback and critique from our fellow theatre people some time this fall.
Thank you to all who helped us get this show on its feet and across an ocean!
More later,
Your Human Fruit Bowl
We have our first review from expats.cz! Fringe Review!
A good way to start the week for sure, but there are 5 more performances to go and, as seen so far, anything can happen! One of these nights I may succeed in remembering everything Andrea wrote :)
However, I am finding new things in the text every night which makes a good back and forth with the audience. We won for overall pre-sale tickets last night: 4! And with a positive review, hopefully the rest of the week will put more bums in those seats!
Rock.
That's right, folks! The lovely men of the Prague Fringe swiped me a tub that awaits my inspection at Divadlo Kampa! Things seem to be coming together. Now I just need my director, who arrives today at 4! Apparently there is a bummer however: I just heard that due to the cranky terrain of Iceland, some companies have had to pull out of the festival. Major bummer. But hopefully it won't put too much of a damper on things! At least "Human Fruit Bowl" is rarin' to go!
Photos to come (as requested by some of you). And now to reconnect with my favorite city.
A Fruitful Bowl
Sam and I are headed to Bologna, with a short pit stop in London tomorrow, for our first leg of this crazy European trip! Then on to Venice for a few days and planning to arrive in Prague a week from Wednesday to start getting HUMAN FRUIT BOWL on it's feet! Director, Liam, heads out Tuesday the 24th! The biggest concern I have right this second is: do I have enough programs for the show? Otherwise, just waiting (as patiently as I know how) to get on the subway to JFK!
Tally ho!
2012 comes to a close and it has been a year of learning and prioritizing. Human Fruit Bowl performed in NYC and we look for other opportunities to get it going again somewhere in the five boroughs. I opened a production of 'Night Mother up in Rhinebeck, NY directed by none other than my own mother, Cora Stempel. A taxing and depressing project it has proven to be extremely rewarding and given me the opportunity to veg out in my hometown and rediscover how nice life can be when you slow down. Upcoming projects will be getting this little actress an agent and carving out a path for Human Fruit Bowl in the college world. Any ideas?
Although this year doesn't promise as much worldly travel as 2011, I am thrilled to say my solo show Human Fruit Bowl will be making its American debut in my hometown of New York City this upcoming June! Where and when is yet to be announced but we are so excited to finally bring our work back to where it all started!
Headed to Hong Kong this Saturday for a week and half of Asian adventure! 5 Performances of Human Fruit Bowl at Hong Kong's Microfest, produced by Giles Burton. Should prove to be the most exotic voyage I've ever taken. Being alone should add an extra twist to the voyage as I'm sure to be spending a lot of time on those streets by myself trying to figure out how much a Buddha should cost...
Heading west over the Pacific in 3.5 weeks. Taking a 15 hour flight to Shanghai then 2 hours to Hong Kong. This brand of jet lag I've only experienced once before going to Australia. Tylenol PM is a must-bring for sure. Will be in Hong Kong for a week and half with 5 scheduled performances of HFB from the 18th-22nd. Super cool!
In Amsterdam for the next 4 days performing Human Fruit Bowl in the Fringe here. Arrived to the airport having forgotten to notify my bank that I was leaving the country, so was without access to my money for about a day and a half. But, no worries. Thankfully, I am here with Sam and his sister and Dad who have all been super helpful and put me at ease immediately welcoming me into their lil temporary Dutch home. Don't know what I would have done had I been here alone.
We rented bikes yesterday and have been peddaling ever since. It truly is the best way to get around the city. Mostly everyone we encounter has been unbelievably nice and welcoming. A huge thank you to the men at Rozentheater who found me a gorgeous tub and have been more than accomodating with the show!
Looking forward to the rest of my short time here and thinking this could be a good place to land for a while...ja.
Tonight will be our third performance of FIT. The first two went super well with great audiences. We got a very nice review from Backstage.com. And hopefully soon to have a review out from NewYorkTheatre.com as well! Last two chances to see the show after tonight will be Thurs 8/25 at 2pm and Sat 8/37 at 9:15pm!
Leaving for Amsterdam in 2 weeks time! Will be performing Human Fruit Bowl Sept 2, 3, 4 and 6th at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival!
I will be performing in Plastic Flamingo Theatre Company's production of FIT starting tomorrow as part of the New York City International Fringe Festival! more info: plasticflamingo.org
We're gettin' the 'ole actin' ball rollin' with a brand spankin' new website! Fancy!
